Work-Life Balance is a Lie: Here's Why
For years, the concept of work-life balance has dominated career-related discussions. As people faced increasing mental health challenges and burnout, experts touted work-life balance as the key to a happier life. However, many highly successful and fulfilled individuals seem to thrive despite a poor work-life balance. So, what’s the truth?
I sought answers to this question and found that while work-life balance sounds good in theory, it's nearly impossible to achieve in practice. The term “work-life balance” seems to cater to the 9-5 crowd, those content with a mediocre life who view work as a necessary but unexciting exchange for money.
Don't get me wrong; hobbies, self-awareness, and a healthy balance are important. But if you despise your job, no amount of work-life balance can fill that void. It's like putting a band-aid on a shotgun wound.
Today, experts advocate for work-life integration rather than balance, acknowledging that balance varies for each person. People have different goals; some prioritise career over family, while others do the opposite.
Step 1: Define What Success Means to You
Identify what success looks like for you personally. If career advancement excites you more than starting a family, that’s okay. Focus on what’s important to you and let the rest of the world wait.
Step 2: Prioritize
Set clear priorities. Knowing your most important tasks helps you say no to less critical opportunities.
Step 3: Establish Non-Negotiable Values
Decide what you're willing to sacrifice for your goals. For me, success is vital, but never at the expense of my health and family. I ensure I spend time with loved ones and maintain my well-being.
Step 4: Determine Your Minimum and Maximum Satisfaction Range
Set thresholds for your health and family time. You don't always have to spend hours doing something to feel accomplished. Small, meaningful interactions can be more satisfying than long, sporadic engagements. For instance, a 10-minute heartfelt conversation or a brief massage can be fulfilling. Or having a 10-minute workout every day is worth more than spending 1 hour per week in the gym.
Step 5: Embrace Imperfection
Accept that not every day will be the same. Some days you'll be more productive, while others you'll spend more time with family. Consistency trumps occasional perfection. Daily, focused attention is more valuable than infrequent, extended interactions.
Step 6: Love What You Do
If you love your work, it won’t feel like a chore. Enjoying your work makes it easier to dedicate long hours to it. In this scenario, your free time becomes a means to recharge rather than an escape from drudgery.
Step 7: Seek Flexibility and Be Ready to Disappoint Others
Crafting a life that suits you won't always align with others’ expectations. When I started my corporate job, I worked four days a week, which concerned me initially but worked out well. Now, running my own business, I have the flexibility to work whenever and wherever necessary, and I do things when they needed to get done, I usually take weekends off completely but not always.
Step 8: Hold Yourself Accountable
Regular self-checks are crucial. Self-awareness is vital in managing your time and energy. Recognise when you need a break to avoid burnout. Understand that your needs may change daily, and adapt your routines accordingly.
Step 9: Boost your brain so you can make the most out of the time you got
If your brain works better, you will be able to finish everything much faster and in a more professional manner. Nootropics and the right nutrition can be your best friends. In conclusion, work-life balance might be an unrealistic ideal. Instead, focus on integrating work and life in a way that aligns with your personal goals and values. This approach will lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life.
